7 Puppy Proofing Tips For New Dog Owners
So, you’ve finally decided to bring a puppy into your life. Congrats! 🎉 Get ready for love, cuddles, and… chaos. Yep, your adorable furball is going to turn your house into their personal playground.
And unless you’re okay with chewed-up shoes, shredded cushions, and the occasional “accident” in a very inconvenient spot, puppy proofing your home is a must.
But don’t sweat it! I’ve got your back. Here are 7 tips to puppy-proof your space without losing your sanity (or your favorite pair of sneakers).
1. Get Down to Their Level (Literally)

Ever wondered what your house looks like from a puppy’s point of view? Hint: it’s a wonderland of chewable cords, dangling objects, and random tasty-looking things (read: everything).
Pro tip: Crawl around on your hands and knees. Yes, you’ll look ridiculous, but it works. You’ll spot hazards like loose wires, small objects, or even houseplants just begging to be munched on.

2. Hide the Chewables
Speaking of wires and cables, these are like gourmet spaghetti for puppies. If you don’t want your pup turning your charging cords into their new favorite chew toy, hide or secure them.
- Use cord protectors or tape wires down.
- Keep chargers unplugged and out of reach when not in use.
- Store headphones, jewelry, and other small items in drawers or containers.
Trust me, it’s cheaper than replacing everything they destroy. Plus, it’s safer for your little furball.
3. Lock It Up
Puppies are tiny Houdinis. If they can nudge open a cabinet or door, they will. And guess what? Your cleaning supplies and snacks are like treasure troves for them.
Install childproof locks on lower cabinets and drawers where you store:
- Cleaning chemicals
- Trash cans
- Medications
Seriously, don’t underestimate their determination. Puppies will get into things you didn’t even know they could reach.

4. Create a Puppy Zone
Okay, you can’t supervise your puppy 24/7 (unless you’re secretly a superhero). That’s where a designated puppy-safe area comes in.
Set up a playpen or use baby gates to block off part of a room. Fill it with:
- Soft bedding
- Chew toys (LOTS of chew toys)
- A water bowl
This way, you know they’re safe while you’re making dinner, taking a shower, or binge-watching your favorite show. Bonus: It keeps them from wreaking havoc on your entire house.
5. Say Goodbye to Carpets (Temporarily)
Here’s the thing: Puppies are adorable, but they’re also walking, barking accidents waiting to happen. If you have carpets or rugs you care about, roll them up and store them for now.

Even if you’re the puppy potty-training MVP, there will be slip-ups. Hardwood or tile floors are way easier to clean than that vintage rug you inherited from your great aunt.
Oh, and if you really can’t part with your rugs? Invest in some waterproof rug pads. Your future self will thank you.
6. Check for Escape Routes
Think your backyard is secure? Think again. Puppies are like tiny escape artists, and they’ll find any hole, gap, or weak spot in your fence.
Inspect your yard thoroughly:
- Look for gaps in fences or gates.
- Remove toxic plants or sharp objects.
- Cover pools or hot tubs if you have them.
And don’t assume a small puppy can’t jump. Some of these little guys can launch themselves like Olympic athletes when they’re motivated enough.

7. Stock Up on Chew Toys (And Then Get More)
Let’s be real: Puppies will chew. It’s how they explore the world and soothe their teething gums. The trick is to give them plenty of acceptable chew options so they (hopefully) leave your stuff alone.
Some puppy favorites include:
- Rubber toys like KONGs (you can even stuff them with treats!)
- Rope toys
- Soft plushies (just be ready to replace these once they inevitably destroy them)
And here’s a hot tip: Rotate their toys. Puppies get bored easily, so swapping out toys every few days will keep things fresh and exciting.
Bonus Tip: Train Early and Often
Okay, this one isn’t technically about “proofing” your house, but it’s just as important. Start teaching your pup what’s off-limits from day one. A firm “no” and redirection to a toy works wonders—eventually. (Patience is key, people.)

Wrapping It Up
Bringing home a puppy is equal parts joy and chaos. But with a little prep and a lot of patience, you can turn your home into a safe haven for your new furry friend—and keep your sanity intact.
Sure, you might lose a sock or two along the way, but hey, that’s part of the deal. 😉 Now go forth, puppy-proof like a pro, and enjoy all the tail wags and wet-nosed kisses your little fluffball has to offer!
