Homemade Meatloaf For Dogs That’ll Make Your Pup Sit, Stay, and Beg for More
Ingredients
- 1.5 pounds lean ground meat (turkey, chicken, or 90% lean beef)
- 1 cup rolled oats (plain, unsweetened)
- 1 cup mashed sweet potato (cooked, skin removed)
- 2 large eggs (binder and extra protein)
- 1 cup finely chopped dog-safe veggies (carrots, green beans, spinach, zucchini)
- 1 /2 cup low-sodium bone broth or water
- 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed (optional, for fiber and omega-3s)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil or salmon oil (healthy fats)
- 1 /4 teaspoon turmeric (optional, anti-inflammatory)
- Pinch of dried parsley (optional, breath helper)
- Zero salt, onion, garlic, or spices (non-negotiable)
Instructions
- Preheat and prep: Set oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a loaf pan with parchment or lightly oil it.
- Cook your sweet potato: Microwave or boil until soft; mash and let cool slightly so it doesn’t scramble the eggs.
- Mix the dry goods: In a large bowl, combine oats, flaxseed, turmeric, and parsley.
- Add the wet: Stir in mashed sweet potato, eggs, broth, and oil until you’ve got a thick, scoopable batter.
- Fold in the protein and veg: Add ground meat and chopped veggies.
Mix with clean hands until just combined—don’t overmix.
- Load the pan: Press the mixture evenly into the loaf pan. Smooth the top for even cooking.
- Bake: Cook for 45–60 minutes, until the center hits 165°F (74°C) and juices run clear.
- Rest: Let it cool in the pan for 10–15 minutes, then transfer to a rack. Cool completely before slicing.
- Portion: Cut into serving sizes based on your dog’s weight and daily calories (see FAQ).
Label and store.
- Serve: Offer as a complete meal or a topper. If your dog is new to home-cooked food, transition slowly over 5–7 days.
