Dog Birthday Cake Recipe (Dog-Safe, No Added Sugar)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (120 g) whole wheat flour, or oat flour if your dog does better without wheat
  • 1 tsp (4 g) baking powder
  • 1 /4 cup (65 g) peanut butter, unsalted and xylitol-free (check the label every time)
  • 1 /2 cup (120 g) plain canned pumpkin puree, not pumpkin pie filling
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 /2 ripe banana (about 50 g), mashed
  • 1 /4 cup (60 ml) water

Instructions

  1. Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 6-inch round pan with a little oil, or line it with parchment.
  2. Mix the wet ingredients. Stir the peanut butter, pumpkin, egg, banana and water in a bowl until smooth.
  3. Add the dry ingredients. Stir in the flour and baking powder until just combined. The batter will be thick, more like muffin batter than cake batter.
  4. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes. It's done when a toothpick in the center comes out clean and the top springs back.
  5. Cool completely. Ten minutes in the pan, then out onto a rack for about an hour. Frosting a warm cake just melts the frosting.
