Beef and Sardine Cat Food - Protein-Rich, Simple, and Cat-Approved

Ingredients

  • 1 pound (450 g) lean ground beef (90–95% lean)
  • 1 can (3.75–4.4 oz / 106–125 g) sardines in water, drained (avoid added salt)
  • 1 large egg (optional, for extra protein and choline)
  • 1 /4 cup finely chopped carrot or pumpkin (lightly cooked)
  • 1 /4 cup finely chopped spinach or zucchini (lightly cooked)
  • 1 tablespoon plain pumpkin puree (optional, for fiber)
  • 1–2 teaspoons fish oil or sardine oil (optional, if sardines are packed in water)
  • 1 /4 cup water or low-sodium, onion-free bone broth
  • Cat-safe supplement with taurine and a feline multivitamin/mineral blend, as directed by your vet

Instructions

  1. Cook the beef. Warm a skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and break it up with a spatula. Cook until fully browned with no pink remaining. Drain excess fat if the beef is very fatty.
  2. Lightly cook the vegetables. Steam or sauté the carrot/pumpkin and spinach/zucchini until soft. This helps digestion and reduces any bitterness.
  3. Prepare the sardines. Drain the sardines if packed in water. If packed in oil, drain well and skip extra fish oil later. Mash the sardines with a fork so they blend smoothly.
  4. Optional egg step. Scramble the egg in a small pan until set, or hard-boil and finely chop. Avoid using raw egg whites.
  5. Combine and moisten. In a large bowl, mix the cooked beef, mashed sardines, vegetables, optional egg, and pumpkin puree. Add water or broth to reach a soft, moist texture. Many cats prefer a slightly wet consistency.
  6. Add supplements. Let the mixture cool until lukewarm. Stir in the taurine and feline multivitamin/mineral powder per package or vet instructions. Mixing at cooler temps helps preserve potency.
  7. Adjust texture. For cats that like pâté, use a food processor and pulse until smooth. For chunk-lovers, leave it more coarse.
  8. Serve. Offer a small portion first to ensure your cat accepts it. Start by mixing a spoonful into their usual food and increase gradually over 3–5 days.
